Lithuania and Romania seek NATO’s enhanced presence in the region
President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with President Klaus Werner Iohannis of Romania. The Romanian President is on a state visit to Lithuania as the two countries are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations. The Presidents of Lithuania and Romania discussed bilateral relations, measures to tackle the migration crisis that has hit Europe, as well as the strengthening of the EU’s energy security and the energy union.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Armin Laschet, deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), and a delegation of parliamentarians from the Landtag of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Christian Democratic Union, whose chairwoman is Chancellor Angela Merkel, is the main partner of the ruling coalition in Germany.
Economic diplomacy must contribute to building the future of Lithuania
President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Lithuanian diplomats working in the field of economy to discuss national economic diplomacy priorities. “Lithuania is a global market player. Slowing growth in developing economies, international security challenges and fluctuating oil prices affect the economy of the world, and of Lithuania. Economic diplomacy must not only help counter global challenges but also contribute to building the future of Lithuania.
Support of the Holy See is important for Europe and Lithuania
President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and presented him with a state decoration. The Grand Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great was presented to the Cardinal for his personal efforts to the development of relations between Lithuania and the Holy See and the promotion of bilateral cooperation in political and cultural areas.
Pope Francis – a strong supporter of European unity
President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended the International Charlemagne Prize award ceremony for Pope Francis. One of the world’s most prestigious awards was presented to the Holy Father for his message of hope and encouragement to Europe, for his contribution to global peace and for promoting the values of compassion, tolerance and solidarity.

According to the President, it is a great shock to the people of Egypt and France. In this hour of deep sorrow, the President wished fortitude to the victims’ families and loved ones, as well as strength and consolidation in investigating the tragic cause of the crash.
