The President to the Director-General of UNESCO: Lithuania will place special focus on ensuring equal opportunities in education

On Saturday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with UNESCO’s Director-General Audrey Azoulay, who is on a visit to Lithuania, in Kaunas.

The President and the Director-General of UNESCO discussed the priorities of Lithuania’s membership of UNESCO’s Executive Board. The President emphasized that Lithuania would place special emphasis on the safety of journalists and access to information as well as on the fight against disinformation.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s agenda were also discussed at the meeting. The President stressed that the issues of inclusion and equal opportunities in education were of particular relevance to Lithuania. An important step has been taken in legislation on the President’s initiative to ensure high-quality early childhood education for children at social risk. Focus on equal opportunities for people with disabilities and the inclusion of children with disabilities in education form an important part of the President’s agenda.

Gitanas Nausėda and the Director-General of UNESCO discussed the phenomenon of Kaunas modernist architecture. The President drew Audrey Azoulay’s attention to the fact that Lithuania had submitted a nomination dossier “Modernist Kaunas: Architecture of Optimism, 1919-1939” to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris for the inscription of Kaunas on the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to the President, Kaunas modernist architecture is truly unique and testifies to the expression of European culture and its specific development in Lithuania.

UNESCO’s Director-General came to Lithuania at the invitation of the President to attend the opening events of “Kaunas – European Capital of Culture 2022”.
