During their telephone conversation held in German, the President expressed his support to Ursula von der Leyen as candidate for the European Commission presidency. “This Sunday started with a very important conversation with the candidate for the new President of the European Commission. I expressed my support to her candidacy. I believe the sooner it is confirmed and the new European Commission is formed, the sooner discussions on key issues for EU member states, including negotiations on the 2021-2027 financial framework, can begin,” President Gitanas Nausėda said.
The phone call also focused on the European Parliament’s upcoming vote of concent for the European Commission President. The Commission’s new composition was reviewed. President Gitanas Nausėda touched on the issue of portfolios and underlined the need to increase the responsibility of new commissioners in dealing with matters of urgency to the European Union.
The President underscored the importance of EU institutional stability and certainty in the face of today’s challenges. Continued attention by EU institutions is hugely important to Lithuania, he said.
The President described the conversation with the candidate as warm and positive. Ursula von der Leyen knows Lithuania very well. In 2017, she was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania. Ties of friendship between Germany and Lithuania are increasingly strengthened by common defense priorities: German troops are currently deployed in Lithuania.
