The President and Angela Merkel discussed ways to solve the irregular migration crisis on the EU’s border with Belarus

On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and discussed measures to tackle the irregular migration crisis on the EU’s border with Belarus.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel informed the President about the content of her talks with Lukashenko on the de-escalation of the situation and the repatriation of migrants.

Gitanas Nausėda stressed that the repatriation of migrants from Belarus to their countries of origin should now be a priority, as this could help to avoid a humanitarian tragedy on the EU-Belarus border. According to Gitanas Nausėda, first of all, it is the responsibility of Belarus to address the humanitarian problems of migrants as they are on the territory of Belarus. Sanctions against the Belarusian regime must be continued and, if necessary, tightened.

The President pointed out that the involvement of the EU and international organizations such as the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) was essential to solve the current situation.

Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that Lithuania, in its turn, was providing all possible humanitarian assistance to people stranded on the Belarusian border, including food, water, warm clothes and blankets, as well as cooperating with Frontex and international humanitarian aid organizations.

The President thanked the German Chancellor for her long years of work and dedication to the European Union.
