The President: The EU will have a support mechanism for crisis-affected countries

2010-12-17

Friday, December 17, Brussels - European leaders agreed on the need to amend the EU Treaty to allow for the establishment of a permanent stability mechanism to be used to rescue struggling countries of the eurozone by helping them stabilize their financial systems.

"Amendments to the Treaty are important for all countries of the European Union, not just the eurozone. For Lithuania, too. No Member State is immune to financial difficulties in the future; therefore, all of them are interested in having a clearly-defined rescue mechanism," says President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė attending the European Council meeting in Brussels.

According to the President, a major achievement of the meeting is the decision to involve all countries of the European Union, including Lithuania, in the setting-up of the permanent financial support mechanism.
