The President received letters of credence from Uruguayan Ambassador


Friday, 10 July, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Pablo Ernesto Scheiner Correa.

The President and the Ambassador discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation between the two countries as well as between Uruguay and the European Union. The states have a good potential to carry out joint science and business projects in the areas of IT, life sciences, innovation, and culture.

Intensifying economic relations between the countries and further possibilities of strengthening them were also addressed. In 2014, trade turnover between Lithuania and Uruguay amounted to 6.6 million euros. Compared to 2013, Lithuanian exports to Uruguay increased 17 times as a result of the export of fertilizers.

Lithuania and Uruguay established diplomatic relations in 1931. Uruguay did not recognize the incorporation of Lithuania into the Soviet Union. Lithuania and Uruguay reestablished diplomatic relations in 1993.

The Uruguay Lithuanian community is only several thousand strong; nevertheless, it is very active. Its members organize festivals on Lithuanian national days, cherish the Lithuanian language and foster cultural traditions.

The Ambassador, born in 1962, is the fourth Uruguayan ambassador to Lithuania, residing in Warsaw. In 1988, Pablo Ernesto Scheiner Correa obtained a doctor’s degree in law and social sciences. Since 1987, when he started his diplomatic career, the Ambassador had worked in Peru and Russia. Since July 2014 he is ambassador to Poland.
