Wednesday, January 16, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė received letters of credence from Ambassador Rita Laranjinha of Portugal.
During their meeting, the President and the Ambassador focused on joint solutions to common defense, energy and migration challenges, Brexit and the EU’s future. They also discussed expanding trade between Lithuania and Portugal, tourism and student exchange.
According to the President, Lithuania and Portugal have significantly strengthened bilateral dialogue within the framework of the European Union and continue working together to protect the interests of their people and of all Europeans. Portugal has been sending rotating troops to Lithuania as a continuing contribution to the security of our country and the whole of the region.
The President underlined that Lithuania was ready to share its experience in the formation of cyber rapid response teams.
The newly appointed ambassador graduated international relations in Lisbon and European studies in Bruges. Rita Laranjinha started her diplomatic career in 1996 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She served in Portuguese embassies in Spain and Angola. While working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she was responsible for European affairs and relations with African and American countries. Before her ambassadorial posting, Rita Laranjinha was head of the Minister’s Cabinet. She has been ambassador to Denmark since 2018, and resides in Copenhagen.
