Friday, March 9, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia, Javier Dario Higuera Angel. The President and the newly appointed Ambassador discussed bilateral cooperation, economic ties and exchanges in tourism, culture and scientific research.
Views were also exchanged on cooperation between the European Union and Colombia as well as Lithuania's and Colombia's accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Speaking about the security situation in the region, the President expressed support to the peace process in Colombia.
In 2016, Lithuania opened its Honorary Consulate in Colombia, and last year songwriter and performer Jurgis Didžiulis was appointed Colombia’s Honorary Consul in Lithuania. The Lithuanian community in Colombia numbers 200, including Antanas Mockus, Rector of the National University of Colombia and Mayor of Bogotá.
Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Colombia were established in 1993.
Javier Dario Higuera Angel, graduate of political sciences, is a career diplomat and Colombia’s sixth ambassador to Lithuania. Since 2017 he has served as ambassador to Poland. He is also accredited to Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, and Bulgaria.
