The President extended congratulations to Iceland on Independence Day


Saturday, June 17, Vilnius President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations, both personally and on behalf of the Lithuanian people, to President Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson of Iceland on the 73rd anniversary of Iceland’s independence.

“Ever since Lithuania’s re-established independence twenty-seven years ago, we enjoy a very special friendship between our countries and our people. This friendship, consolidated by support and trust, has bound Lithuania and Iceland – two geographically distant but close countries in terms of values and intense desire for freedom,” the President wrote in her message of congratulations.

According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, today, Lithuania and Iceland are like-minded partners working together to further strengthen bilateral dialogue, collaboration in NATO and in the Baltic Sea region. The President stated that Lithuania highly valued cooperation in the area of defense, common approach to challenges and Iceland’s contribution to the formation of NATO’s forward presence in Lithuania.

The President underscored that every Lithuanian knew why streets in our towns and cities were named after Iceland and wished that this close friendship opened up additional opportunities to learn more about exceptional Lithuanian and Icelandic cultures and encouraged to develop joint projects in the areas of science, innovation, business, sport, and tourism.

On the occasion of national day, Dalia Grybauskaitė wished the President and the people of Iceland a happy celebration, every success, happiness and prosperity.
