Sunday, June 10, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations, both personally and on behalf of the Lithuanian people, to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal on national day and wished all Portuguese every success, happiness, and prosperity.
In her message of congratulations, the President wrote that common matters on the European and security agenda, successful response to economic and political challenges served for a rapprochement between Lithuania and Portugal over the recent decade. The President underscored that the membership of the European Union and NATO not only validated shared interests, goals and values but also revealed the areas in which Lithuania and Portugal might pursue even closer cooperation on a state and personal level.
According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, Lithuania and Portugal enjoy strong bilateral dialogue; both countries expand practical relations not only in trade and business but also in security and military cooperation. The President underscored that Lithuania and Portugal participated in joint exercises in the region, sustained and jointly ensured effective defense capabilities. Lithuania highly appreciates the fact that Portuguese military aircrafts contribute in ensuring security of the Baltic region.
In her message of congratulations, the President wished that a strong value based background opened even more avenues for the development of beneficial cooperation among the people of both countries in the near future.
