Monday, December 4, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended on behalf of herself and the Lithuanian people congratulations to Finland on Independence Centenary.
She wished President Sauli Niinistö and the Finnish people long years of prosperity, freedom and peace.
The President underlined that one hundred years ago the citizens of Finland proved that they were strong and independent in spirit, and they had demonstrated it many times since. Finland decisively overcame all the challenges, defended its values and created a successful democracy, a free and happy society.
The decision made by the Finnish citizens one hundred years ago, the President pointed out, was extremely important for the Lithuanian people who will celebrate the centenary of their national independence next year. This brave step inspired Lithuanians, too, to take on full responsibility for the future of their nation.
“We see the Finnish people as true friends. It is good to have such a committed like-minded partner in the Baltic Sea region and within the European Union,” the President wrote in her message of congratulations. She expressed her confidence that the two countries would continue to be allies across a wide range of key issues and that increasingly closer cooperation on continental and security matters would consolidate their long-term interests, making them both stronger and more resilient.
The President stressed that many more opportunities would open up for the citizens of Lithuania and Finland as they continued on the path of friendship. In the coming years, the President wrote, the people of Lithuania and Finland will work together even more closely on successful innovative projects and will effectively pursue joint initiatives in business, culture, academic and scientific exchange for the benefit of the two countries and the continent.
