President of the Republic of Lithuania

Presidents of Lithuania and Poland to discuss closer cooperation

Tuesday, 13 February, Vilnius – At the invitation of President Dalia Grybauskaitė, President Andrzej Duda of Poland arrives on a visit to Lithuania.  On February 16, the President of Poland and other heads of state as well as EU leaders will attend the festive events of the Centennial of the Restoration of the State of Lithuania. On February 17, at 11 a.m., President Andrzej Duda will meet with President Dalia Grybauskaitė.

The Presidents of Lithuania and Poland will discuss closer bilateral cooperation in the areas of security, economy, energy and transport.

According to Dalia Grybauskaitė, Lithuania’s defense is closely interlinked with that of Poland. Therefore, the protection of the Suwalki corridor, regional air defense and military mobility as well as cooperation in countering cyber threats will be in the focus of the meeting.  The Presidents will discuss additional collective defense measures to be pursued at the NATO summit in July.

The two heads of state will also discuss the synchronization of power grids and the gas pipeline project GIPL. These strategic energy projects that will finalize the integration of the Baltic countries’ electricity and gas markets into the common EU energy market are vitally important for the energy security of the entire region.

Lithuania and Poland hold the same position on Russia’s geopolitical projects that represent a threat to EU energy security.  Poland, like Lithuania, upholds a principled stance that the unsafe Astravyets nuclear power plant under construction in Belarus poses danger to all Europeans. It has made a decision not to buy electricity produced there.

Both countries oppose plans to build the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 as it is not economically viable and would be in gross violation with the EU Energy Union and fair competition principles as well as increase Europe’s dependence on gas supplies from Gazprom.

The meeting’s agenda also includes bilateral economic cooperation. Lithuania and Poland already enjoy intensive business relations. Poland is the third largest trade partner of Lithuania and its sixth largest investor.
