Tuesday, June 12, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė took part in the traditional Nordic–Baltic Midsummer celebration organized by the ambassadors of the Nordic and Baltic countries at the Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Kairėnai.
In her speech of welcome, the President underlined that Midsummer was always celebrated with partners and friends and that it was seen as a symbol of friendship between Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.
This year, the festival marks the centenaries of independence the three Baltic States. According to the President, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are modern nations who are also very good at preserving the traditions of their ancestors.
The Nordic and Baltic Midsummer was observed for the sixth consecutive summer in Lithuania. It celebrates the cultural togetherness of the Baltic and Nordic countries. The spirit of the festival – created by the same traditions of singing, dancing and bonfires, symbolizing friendship and unity – is shared around the Baltic Sea.
More than 800 members of the large Nordic Baltic community in Lithuania, including diplomats, business people, researchers, and artists, attended the Midsummer festival.
