Thursday, June 15, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė took part in the traditional Nordic Baltic Midsummer celebration at the Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Kairėnai.
"The Nordic and Baltic countries have been celebrating Midsummer for many centuries. The festival is known by different names in different cultures, but the spirit of celebration is one around the Baltic Sea. We share the same traditions of singing, dancing and lighting bonfires – which symbolize our friendship, unity and togetherness,” the President said.
She pointed out that this festival was a symbol of friendship between Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark - political, economic and cultural partners united by common values and challenges.
More than 800 participants, including representatives of the Nordic Baltic diplomatic, business, academic, and arts communities, attended the Midsummer festival held for the fifth year in Vilnius. The President thanked all those who had dedicated their time and efforts to promoting this wonderful summer tradition, and wished everybody a happy celebration.
