President of the Republic of Lithuania

Lithuania’s voice is heard all over Europe

Wednesday, May 1, Vilnius President Dalia Grybauskaitė took part in an official celebration of the 15th anniversary of Lithuania‘s membership at the European Union held at the S. Daukantas Square.

Lithuanian and the European Union flags were raised at the solemn ceremony and both anthems were performed. In her speech, the President congratulated the people of Lithuania and stressed that 15 years ago we managed to return to the European family and become visible, heard, and recognized.

According to the President, Europe taught us a lot, including confidence, respect, and ability to grow and develop and take care of our people. It now depended on us how we used this potential and no one else could tell us how we should live, they could only help us.

The President said that we had many rights – to travel and study wherever we like, and stay in any country in Europe. Being a part of the European Union we understand very well that the stronger this organization is, the stronger we are. The EU also gave us an opportunity to avoid internal populism and that guaranteed security both socially and in terms of defense.

The President wished all the people of Lithuania to remain true Europeans and make a well-thought decision at the European Parliament as well as other election. The future lies in our hands and our future depends on the people we elect.

A special concert was held next to the Presidential Palace. The concert started with a song Run with the Lions performed by Jurijus Veklenko who will represent Lithuania in this year’s Eurovision. This was where his official ceremony of seeing off for the song contest held in Israel on May 14th took place. The President handed the national flag to Jurijus Veklenko and wished for the flag to bring him luck in the European song contest. Then the band Antikvariniai Kašpirovskio dantys performed for residents and guests of Vilnius.
