Wednesday, March 7, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė awarded General Volker Wieker, Chief of Defense of the German Armed Forces, with the Cross of Commander of the Order for Merits to Lithuania in recognition of his exceptional merits, support and personal contribution to strengthening Lithuania's security and bilateral military cooperation.
General Volker Wieker – a deeply committed friend of Lithuania – demonstrated strong and effective leadership in implementing NATO's decisions of critical importance to Lithuanian national defense. Under his command, Germany was among the first allies to deploy rotational forces, actively participate in joint military exercises and take on the lead of NATO's enhanced forward presence in Lithuania.
Today Germany is a key defense ally of Lithuania. In order to improve military integration and interoperability, the Mechanized Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf will be affiliated with a German army division.
Germany is also Lithuania's main partner for military acquisitions. Lithuania buys German-made Boxer infantry fighting vehicles, howitzers, armored personnel carriers, naval and machine guns, and grenade launchers.
The number of Germany's deployments to NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission is the highest among allied countries. The German Air Force was tasked nine times to guard the skies over Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
The two countries collaborate effectively to strengthen Lithuania's defense capabilities and conduct joint military exercises. German experts work at the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence and in NATO's Force Integration Unit in Vilnius.
Lithuania, too, is a committed partner of Germany in international operations. Lithuanian soldiers serve in the UN-led operation MINUSMA in Mali and the EU operation Sophia in the Mediterranean as part of the German contingent.
