Friday, December 7, Kyiv – President Dalia Grybauskaitė received an exclusive civil society award in Kyiv for her committed support to the people of Ukraine.
In her speech of acceptance, the President highlighted that the award signified high recognition of the people of Lithuania. According to the President, we understand very well that Ukraine is also fighting for the security of Lithuania and the whole of Europe. Therefore we help Ukraine as their true friends and supporters and actively stand for Ukraine’s interests in the West.
Lithuania does not only provide political, military and humanitarian support. A lot of medication, medical equipment and funds have been collected and delivered to Ukraine at the initiative of the Lithuanian people and NGOs. On January 13, a fund raising event has been running for several years. It is organized by the civic initiative Blue/Yellow launched by Jonas Ohman, and the President is its patron.
According to the President, this award is a symbolic and beautiful Ukrainian sign of gratitude for our friendship, solidarity and support.
The award has been initiated by the NGO Kryla Peremogi (Helping Wings). The organization provides medical assistance to soldiers and their children at the front line as well as humanitarian aid to the residents of eastern regions of Ukraine and facilitates the integration of injured soldiers with disabilities.
The award was established in 2017. It aims to honor courageous and pro-active women. It is usually awarded to women who defend Ukraine’s freedom and independence, engage in social and humanitarian activities.
Some 500 people and organizations have received this award so far.
