Wednesday, May 8, Vilnius – Tomorrow, on Thursday, May 9, President Dalia Grybauskaitė is leaving for Sibiu in Romania to attend the European Council meeting.
Ahead of the European Parliament election to be held on May 23-26, Romania which currently holds the presidency of the European Union hosts a summit to address the EU future issues.
The European Council meeting coincides with the Europe Day which dates back to 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman then invited Germany and other Western European countries to build peace and unity together and laid the foundations of values for the current European Union.
Before the European Parliament election, EU leaders will adopt a joint political declaration that focuses on European unity, fundamental freedoms and strengthening of the principle of the rule of law and the need to look for joint solutions.
In Sibiu, the first leaders’ debate on the EU’s future political guidelines for 2019-2024 will take place. Those political guidelines will set the course for European development in four key areas – protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens, economic development, building a sustainable and fair European future and strengthening its role in the world.
EU leaders should discuss the specific proposals on the strategic EU agenda at the end of June in Brussels.
