President: there is a need to enhance bilateral and regional Nordic-Baltic cooperation and policy coordination on the EU level

Friday, July 17, Riga - Continuing her working visit to the Republic of Latvia, President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Latvia's Speaker of Parliament Gundars Daudze and Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis in Riga.

The meeting with the Speaker of Parliament focussed mainly on the development of inter-parliamentary relations. The parties of the meeting underlined the need to shape and discuss joint positions to be taken by legislative authorities (parliaments) of the two states within the European Union.

President Grybauskaitė said she would urge Lithuanian MPs to cooperate more actively with their Latvian counterparts in considering and drafting European Union directives.

According to the Head of State, coordination of matters of common concern within the European Union is in the interest of both states, Lithuania and Latvia.

Other issues discussed were related to energy development, the construction of electricity bridge from Sweden to Lithuania and Latvia, and the prospects of implementing this project.

The parties of the discussion agreed that the implementation of the project is successful so far, but the technical side of the project must be completed as soon as possible. Also, the importance of cooperation with the Swedish Presidency of the European Union and the benefit and necessity of coordinating common policies within the Baltic Assembly were stressed.

Issues discussed in the meeting with Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis were the economic situation in the country and negotiations of the Latvian Government with the International Monetary Fund.

President Grybauskaitė expressed strong support and willingness to help Latvia's Governments both politically and by sharing negotiation experience.

Talking about energy cooperation, President Grybauskaitė underlined Lithuania was open to Latvia's participation in the construction of the new nuclear power plant. According to the Head of State, Lithuania's immediate tasks are to create energy market, strengthen energy transmission network, and build electricity bridge to Sweden. The President is confident that without these three things, there is no point in talking about construction of a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

The Latvian Head of Government said his country was keeping the commitment laid down in the Trakai Memorandum, to participate in the construction of the new nuclear power plant.

Having underlined that all three Baltic States were going through a difficult period and facing similar problems, President Grybauskaitė and Prime Minister Dombrovskis stressed the need for enhanced bilateral and regional Nordic-Baltic cooperation and for a more efficient coordination of foreign policy on the EU level.
