The President: smooth return of Lithuanian citizens must be ensured even with tougher rules for return

2020-04-02

During a video call, President Gitanas Nausėda and Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius discussed the possibilities for Lithuanian citizens to return home after the Government introduced tougher procedure for return as of April 1. According to the latest data, some 180 citizens expect help from the state to return home.

“The repatriation process is coming to an end. After tighter rules for repatriation were introduced, Lithuanian nationals would be provided an exclusive possibility to return to Lithuania during the first days of April using flights, ferries and cars organized by the EU. These are exceptions, and there will be even fewer opportunities to return later,” the President said.

During the conversation, the Minister Linkevičius presented the latest statistical data and the procedure of return of Lithuanian citizens. 3253 Lithuanians have already returned home by March 30. A few more hundred Lithuanian nationals reached home on repatriation flights organized by the European Union and other countries, with the help of Lithuanian diplomatic missions abroad.

The conversation focused on cooperation of the Ministry and embassies. The President expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lithuanian embassies, missions and consulates all over the world for their active and efficient role in repatriation of Lithuanian citizens and ensuring deliveries of medical supplies to Lithuania. “All employees of diplomatic missions helped us fulfill our constitutional duty and made our work for the Lithuanian people living all around the world meaningful,” added the President.
