On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda held a phone call with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The President and the Prime Minister of Spain discussed the tense security situation in the region as well as Russia’s military build-up on the border with Ukraine and in Belarus.
During the conversation, the President emphasized that the security situation in the region was deteriorating and tensions were rising along the border with Ukraine. Gitanas Nausėda stressed that amid growing geopolitical tensions it was crucial not to accept the narrative imposed by Russia about former Soviet countries, zones of interest and lines of contact as well as not to accept Russia’s challenge to Europe’s entire security architecture.
“We are grateful to Spain and all allies for strengthening NATO’s eastern wing. Acting in unity and solidarity in the face of threats is a core value and principle of the allies,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda and the Spanish Prime Minister agreed to regularly exchange information and assessments of the situation.
