President of the Republic of Lithuania

The President: I call upon Belarus to ensure safe, free and fair elections and fundamental human rights

President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius. The President and the Minister discussed the assessment of the political situation in Belarus in the run-up to the presidential elections on 9 August.

"We are watching closely the presidential election campaign and call upon Belarus to follow universally accepted democratic principles. Repression against civil society is intolerable Belarus that is a European country. I urge the Belorussian leadership to ensure safe, free and fair elections as well as fundamental human rights and freedoms. I condemn any interference of Russia in the process and outcome of the presidential elections in Belarus“, the President said.

During the conversation, the President asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs to ensure a prompt dialogue with Belarus and the European Union institutions regarding the process of the presidential election in Belarus and to defend Lithuania's position at the international level regarding the safety issues at the Ostravets NPP since they started loading nuclear fuel into the first reactor.

The President reiterated that Lithuania's position on the Ostravets NPP remains unchanged. “This object poses threat to the national security, public health and the environment of our country. Lithuania must be prepared to protect the Lithuanian people and vital interests of the country“, the President said.

President Nausėda stressed Lithuania's strong position not to purchase electricity produced in the country where the unsafe nuclear power plant operated and not to give Belarus access to the reserve of Kruonis pumped storage hydroelectric plant.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs was instructed to enhance the coordination of Lithuanian institutions and experts and ensure the dissemination of correct information to the EU and the international partners on the safety of the Ostravets NPP, as well as to consolidate diplomatic efforts to prevent unsafe electricity from entering the Lithuanian, regional and EU markets.
