President Gitanas Nausėda extended congratulations to President Andrzej Duda and all the people of Poland on the 500th birth anniversary of Sigismund Augustus, King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania.
According to the President, Sigismund Augustus was a very bright personality, deeply ingrained in the historical memory of the Lithuanians and Poles, who linked the history and cultural heritage of our countries and people. The King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania ruled at a time when this region of Europe, and thus the whole of the Western civilization, was under threat from its Eastern neighbor.
“A neighborhood based on wisdom, regional foresight and European identity then brought our nations into a closer political union that not only ensured the independence of our states but also contributed to the preservation of fundamental European values”, said the President in the message of congratulations.
While Sigismund Augustus resided in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, it would turn to the center of the renaissance culture, the political and diplomatic epicenter of the European region, where European politics of the time was modeled.
“This eminent personality inspired entire generations of Lithuanians and Poles in their struggle for freedom and independence and laid a solid foundation for the creation and prosperity of today’s Lithuanian and Polish states”, the President emphasized.
The President also invited President Andrzej Duda and his spouse Agata to visit Vilnius and the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania once so loved and cherished by the last ruler of the Jagiellonian dynasty who lead the two states.
The President wished the President and all the people of Poland continued success, prosperity and unity.
