President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with President of the European Council Charles Michel to discuss the complicated political situation in neighboring Belarus.
The President encouraged the EU institutions to respond to the situation in Belarus actively and assume leadership in ensuring stability, respect of democratic values and human rights and freedoms in Belarus.
The President referred to the situation in Belarus as extremely serious and worrying not only for Lithuania but the entire EU as well.
The President asked Charles Michel to convene an extraordinary Council meeting to discuss the measures aimed at stabilizing the situation in Belarus, likely impact measures and possible sanctions against the country.
The President of the European Council said he understood how serious the situation in Belarus was and reassured Gitanas Nausėda that he will inform of the possibility to hold such a Council meeting and use other instruments available at the disposal of the EU in a few days.
The President informed Charles Michel of the arrival of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in Lithuania and reassured that he kept in touch with the people surrounding her. According to the President, Lithuania is prepared to grant asylum to the Belorussian opposition leader and her family until she decides on her further political and personal actions.
