The President at the European Council: EU leaders agreed with Lithuania’s proposals on migration policy

On Friday, President Gitanas Nausėda continues to attend the European Council meeting in Brussels. Friday’s session is dedicated to the topics of migration and digital transformation.

During the European Council session, the President raised the issue of combating illegal migration in the face of the hybrid attack by the Belarus regime.

“It is necessary to take immediate action. The need to improve EU legislation on migration, asylum and border protection is clear,” the President said.

During the meeting, Gitanas Nausėda presented proposals drawn up with like-minded countries for necessary changes to EU law. Changes are needed to strengthen the protection of external borders and to ensure effective prevention of illegal border crossings.

The Council reached an agreement on migration. Conclusions include a statement that the EU condemns hybrid attacks at its external borders and that the instrumentalization of illegal migration for political purposes will not be tolerated. It was agreed to extend sanctions to persons and legal entities involved in organizing a hybrid attack. European leaders also agreed to call on the European Commission to make concrete proposals to amend the relevant legislation on migration policy.

"I am pleased to note that today we have reached an agreement with our EU colleagues on the issue of illegal migration. Lithuania's proposals have been taken into account and included in the conclusions of the meeting. EU leaders have set out clear guidelines and tasks for the European Commission to undertake in the near future," the President said after the meeting.

During the debate on digital transformation, Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Lithuania welcomed the progress made in the creation of the European Digital Market: the legislative proposals for Data Governance Act, Artificial Intelligence Act, Path to the Digital Decade, etc.
