Mr. Verhofstadt presented a package of financial measures to help Central European and Baltic countries overcome the consequences of economic recession. The proposed measures will soon be submitted for plenary discussion at the European Parliament.
The President evaluated the proposals in favorable terms. She underlined that the European Union should place a stronger focus on energy security, electricity interconnections and trans-European networks.
Speaking about the introduction of the euro, President Grybauskaitė pointed out that the euro zone was an instrument to stabilize the state's finances; therefore, the Maastricht criteria for euro adoption should not be eased.
The President and the former Prime Minister of Belgium also discussed the prospects of cooperation between the Baltic States and the Benelux countries.
