President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone call with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, to discuss the political situation in Moldova, measures to combat the pandemic and the security situation in the region.
Gitanas Nausėda expressed support to Moldova’s President in her pursuit of change and ambitious reforms in the country.
“Lithuania and Moldova demonstrate clear determination to seek closer cooperation on Moldova’s chosen path of European integration. President Maia Sandu’s commitment and resolve are very much needed for Moldova to implement reforms and move closer to the European Union,” the President said.
The meeting also focused on the spread of the pandemic and the challenges of containing it. The President said that Lithuania was considering sharing vaccines with Moldova when their supply was sufficient for our country. Gitanas Nausėda underlined that he was actively engaged in supporting the EU’s vaccine sharing mechanism with Eastern Partnership countries and regularly raised the issue at European Council meetings.
Views were exchanged on the security situation in the region. The presidents expressed concern at the increasing number of ceasefire violations in Ukraine and the growing demonstration of Russian military power on the Ukrainian border.
The leaders of Lithuania and Moldova agreed to meet in near future as soon as the pandemic situation allows.
Moldova has been an active participant in the EU’s Eastern Partnership since its launch in 2009. The Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU was signed in 2014.
