Monday, June 30, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from Ambassador Teshome Toga Chanaka of Ethiopia.
According to the President, Lithuania-Ethiopia relations are not very strong as yet, but they would intensify after accreditation of Lithuania's ambassador to Ethiopia.
At the meeting, the President underlined that Lithuania valued Ethiopia's efforts to maintain security and peace in the region. Ethiopia leads the organization which mediates South Sudan's peace talks; 4,000 Ethiopian troops participate in the peacekeeping mission in Somali.
The President and the Ambassador also discussed cooperation opportunities in carrying out student exchange programmes. Students from Ethiopia would be welcome in Lithuania, the President said.
Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Ethiopia were established on 19 October 1998. Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa and one of its fastest growing economies.
Teshome Toga Chanaka is Ethiopia's second ambassador to Lithuania. He is also ambassador of Ethiopia to Benelux countries, residing in Brussels. The diplomat (55) graduated from Addis Ababa and Cairo Universities, holds a PhD in Demography. In the course of his diplomatic career, the Ambassador served as the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament, and Ethiopia's ambassador to France.
