Thursday, November 28, Vilnius - Dalia Grybauskaitė presented one of the highest Lithuanian state awards to the Prime Minister of Luxembourg and former longtime President of the Eurogroup, Jean-Claude Juncker, who has arrived in Lithuania for the Vilnius Summit.
The Grand Cross of the Order of Vytautas the Great has been conferred on the head of Luxembourg government for personal merits to the development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Luxembourg and for active contribution to the promotion of cooperation between the two nations.
A decree of the President of the Republic of Lithuania on the conferment of the award underscores the significant support of Luxembourg and of the Prime Minister personally to Lithuania's integration into the European Union and NATO.
"Re-independent Lithuania has always felt Luxembourg's strong support. Luxembourg, one of the six founding member states of the European Communities, committed to strengthening peace, democracy and well-being, consistently backed Lithuania's EU and NATO membership aspirations. Today we are happy to work together for the good of a unified, growing and open Europe," the President said.
According to the President, Luxembourg is a perfect example to Lithuania as the EU presiding country, how a small nation with few administrative resources can successfully preside over the union of 28 states, reconciling and representing the interests of all of them. EU Council Presidency was last held by Luxembourg in 2005.
Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker has arrived in Lithuania to attend the Vilnius Summit - the biggest and most important event of the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council which expects highest-level delegations from the 28 EU members and the six Eastern Partnership countries.
