United Kingdom is Lithuania’s important partner in NATO and the EU

Wednesday, July 18, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with British Foreign Secretary William Hague to discuss the economic situation in Europe, the new EU financial framework, regional security, Lithuania's forthcoming presidency of the European Union, and the development of bilateral relations.

The importance of fiscal disciple for economic stability was emphasized at the meeting. According to the President, fiscal discipline helped Lithuania to escape financial downfall and ensured its economic growth - one of the fastest in the European Union. Lithuania's efforts were also commended by the British Foreign Secretary.

The President pointed out that the European Union needed an ambitious financial framework which would allow to use the funds effectively and to promote economic growth. It should also be aimed at reducing the disparities between European regions.

According to the President, the United Kingdom is Lithuania's important partner in negotiating the new financial framework. In the process, Lithuania will seek to ensure fair payments to farmers and appropriate allocations from structural funds.

The President and the British Foreign Secretary also touched on Lithuania's preparations for EU presidency. Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that it was a top priority for Lithuania, highlighted in all of its work agendas.

William Hague's visit is the first visit by a British foreign secretary to Lithuania after independence.
