President of the Republic of Lithuania

U.S. transit is beneficial for Lithuania

Wednesday, August 20, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with General Paul J. Selva, Commander of U.S. Transportation Command of the Department of Defense (USTRANSCOM). The President and the General discussed military cooperation between Lithuania and the United States of America as well as prospects for using Klaipėda Seaport and other infrastructure in Lithuania for the transportation of military and commercial cargoes of NATO allies.

The port of Klaipėda is part of the Northern distribution corridor which has been used for the U.S. NATO ISAF transit through Lithuania to Afghanistan since 2008.

According to the President, Lithuania has proved to be a reliable partner in carrying out large-scale international logistics operations; therefore, its experience and infrastructure could be successfully used for the military and commercial purposes of the United States of America and NATO. Besides, Klaipėda is the only northern port of the Baltic Sea that does not freeze in winter. Lithuania also has the region's biggest military airport in Zokniai.

The President noted that transportation of large cargoes through the territory of Lithuania was beneficial for the country's business, public and private companies of transport and logistics.

Speaking about bilateral cooperation, the President underlined that Lithuania highly valued strong support of the United States of America in strengthening the security of Lithuania and the whole region. Dalia Grybauskaitė also informed about launching the liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipėda at the end of this year. Therefore, she said, Lithuania is interested in opportunities to import U.S. shale gas.
