President Gitanas Nausėda is attending the European Council meeting in Brussels on 24-25 June.
The session will focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, migration, the EU’s relations with Russia, Turkey, and Belarus, and the euro area. The EU leaders will also meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
At the European Council meeting, the President will draw attention of the EU leaders to the problem posed by illegal migration across the Lithuanian-Belarus border and will stress that the migrant flow from Belarus is one of the means of pressure by the Belarusian regime on EU member states in response to the sanctions imposed.
“It is necessary to use all available EU instruments to manage illegal migration flows across the external border of the European Union,” the President said before the visit.
Gitanas Nausėda will also point out to the EU leaders the need for a united, principled, and value-based EU position in its relations with Russia.
The European Council session will also focus on the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, fiscal policy, and matters related to the banking union and the capital markets union.
