"Lithuanians and Latvians are the only Balts who have survived. Therefore, it is our duty to preserve the Balts' identity, language and culture. We have to defend our interests together. In the thirteenth century we joined forces in the Battle of Saule. Now we must strive together for energy independence and the wellbeing of our people," Dalia Grybauskaitė said.
The President underlined that in many spheres Lithuania and Latvia have the same priorities, in particular in regards to energy security. Only by pooling our efforts, we will be able to implement faster and better the projects of importance for both countries, such as Visaginas NPP, power and gas interconnections with Northern Europe and Poland.
It is in the interest of our two countries to create the regional gas market, ensure alternative gas supply and lower prices. Lithuania is constructing the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal which opens opportunities for Latvia as well - the gas transmission pipeline between Klaipėda and Kuršėnai will enable Lithuania to supply gas to its neighbors. And the Incukalns gas repository in Latvia can become a regional gas bank.
The President will raise the issues of energy security and energy independence also at the debates of the United Nations General Assembly.
Lithuania and Latvia hold the same position in negotiations on the EU's new financial framework. Both countries seek a fairer allocation of payments to the farmers of the old and new member states and the ending of discriminating reduction of structural support.
Lithuania and Latvia, according to the President, have demonstrated their unity a number of times not only in the Baltic Sea region but also in the EU and NATO. Through joint efforts have been adopted decisions on security issues important for the Baltics - approval of the Baltic countries' contingency plans, collective defence guarantees, and extension of the air policing mission for indefinite term. The two countries share the same view on the fiscal compact treaty.
