The President’s congratulations to the new pontiff

Wednesday, March 14, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė has extended congratulations to Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, who has been chosen as the new head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis I. The President also congratulated the faithful of Lithuania and the world on the election of their new spiritual leader, and wished renewal to the world and the Church.

"It is a very special message not only to the Roman Catholic Church, but also to all faithful and secular people around the world. I am certain that Your Holiness will continue the mission of your predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, in uniting the Christians and also as spiritual leader and model example for the world," the President writes in her letter of congratulations.

The President wished the new pontiff every success and resilience on his pastoral path.

Dalia Grybauskaitė together with other heads of state will attend the papal inauguration ceremony in the Vatican and will present a Lithuanian Palm Sunday flower - verba - to His Holiness.
