On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with members of the Danish Lithuanian community and called on them to promote the Lithuanian spirit and citizenship as well as to work together to ensure that all Lithuanian people can retain their Lithuanian citizenship, no matter where they live or what they do.
According to the President, now it is of utmost importance to make sure that the issue of retaining citizenship is resolved as early as in 2024 when a new referendum on this issue may be held. We need to mobilize and prepare for this now.
“We are talking about children who can be saved for Lithuania – or lost to Lithuania,” the President said about the need to support and develop Lithuanian language education in Denmark.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that all Danish Lithuanians could take an active part in creating Lithuania’s welfare. All of them are invited to return to Lithuania – or to contribute to its success in other ways.
Issues concerning Green Lithuania, Lithuania’s image abroad and the ongoing challenges it faces were also discussed during the meeting.
Up to 15 thousand Lithuanians currently live in Denmark. The Danish Lithuanian community, the Lithuanian Community of Jutland and Funen, the Lithuanian Youth Society in Denmark, the Lithuanian Club of Professionals in Copenhagen, as well as Lithuanian schools in various Danish cities are all active across Denmark.
