President of the Republic of Lithuania

The President will take personal part in nominating Eurocommissioner

Friday, July 26, Vilnius – President Gitanas Nausėda has expressed concern about the overlong process of selecting a candidate for member of the European Commission and urges to complete the nomination as soon as possible.

“Pushing around over the candidate for Eurocommissioner and inability to reach an agreement between the Seimas, the Government and the Prime Minister delays and discredits the nomination process, damages our negotiating capabilities that are successfully used by other countries,” the President said.

According to Gitanas Nausėda, immediate coordinated diplomatic action is necessary for Lithuania to get a position in the European Commission that best suits its own national interests and those of the European Union.

The President underlined that he was ready to work together with the Government in the coming days to select a candidate who will then be submitted for parliamentary approval.

“It is important that the Lithuanian nominee for the European Commission should have extensive expertise, high professional reputation, good governance skills. and political experience,” the President said.

The President represents Lithuania at the European Council, which submits a list of candidates for the European Commission to be approved by the Europarliament, and later formally puts the new team into office. President Gitanas Nausėda points out that he therefore has a direct duty to take personal part in selecting a new candidate from Lithuania.
