On February 11, President Gitanas Nausėda will go on a visit to Brussels to meet with Charles Michel, President of the European Council. The meeting should focus on the draft multiannual framework 2021-2027.
During the working dinner Lithuania‘s position and expectations in terms of funding for cohesion policy and the size of direct payments to Lithuanian farmers will be presented. The meeting should also cover implementation of the EU‘s commitments under the accession treaty, i.e., to ensure adequate funding for the decommissioning of Ignalina NPP and effective functioning of Kaliningrad transit scheme.
“Striking the right balance between climate change and innovation, and funding of traditional policies such as agriculture and cohesion must be ensured to achieve ambitious targets of the strategic EU agenda. We will take an active part in the negotiations for Lithuania‘s interests to be reflected in the EU budget,” said the President before the visit.
President of the Council is holding meetings with member state leaders to be able to hear their expectations and proposals for the multiannual financial perspective before the negotiations start during the next Council meeting on February 20.
