Monday, August 19, Vilnius – Tomorrow, August 20, President Gitanas Nausėda will go for a working visit to Estonia which celebrates the day of Restoration of Independence. Meetings with President Kersti Kaljulaid, Prime Minister Jüri Ratas and President of the Riigikogu Henn Põlluaas are scheduled in the programme.
The President’s visit to Estonia coincides with two significant historical dates – 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way and 40th anniversary of the Baltic Appeal signed by 45 Baltic citizens.
The two leaders will discuss bilateral political and economic cooperation, security situation in the Baltic region, NATO defense plans as well as EU agenda, including the new financial framework and formation of the new European Commission, during the visit. The meeting will also focus on strengthening of trilateral cooperation among the Baltic States in the form of Presidents’ meetings, collaboration between Lithuania and Estonia in research and innovation and development of the joined Baltic capital market.
The President will address energy issues, including power grid synchronization with the continental Europe, single European natural gas market and safety of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant. Shared transport infrastructure development matters such as Rail Baltica and Via Baltica should also be raised.
President Nausėda will visit the International Museum for the Victims of Communism and lay flowers in tribute to the victims of communism, meet with the Lithuanian Community in Estonia later on, and in the evening, during the reception at the Kadriorg Palace, the President will extend congratulations to the Estonian people on the occasion of Restoration of Independence.
