On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with Minister of Defense Arvydas Anušauskas to discuss the situation, activity plans and objectives of the national defense system in 2021, focusing on cyber security challenges.
“Currently hostile states are increasingly testing cyber security situation in the country, it is therefore, necessary to strengthen our resilience in this area and focus on the effective operation of the National Cyber Security Center” said the President emphasizing that all institutions must take care of their own security and must be involved in enforcing the applicable requirements.
Recently, there has been an increase in different levels of threats, both through cyber attacks and disinformation, as well as through the soft impact of cooperation agreements in cultural and scientific projects. The President proposed to hold an inter-institutional meeting and focus on raising awareness among the public to address the issue.
The Minister introduced the priority areas of the national defense system and assistance to civil authorities in managing the emergency situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic was also discussed. According to the President, it is necessary to adapt the existing emergency, crisis and other threat management systems, involve all the stakeholders such as ministries and other state and municipal institutions in management and supervision of those systems.
“A global approach to national security and defense must combine the capabilities and efforts of citizens and public authorities”, the President said as he encouraged to look for common approach to defense and mobilization tasks.
During the meeting, the President also emphasized the importance of transatlantic cooperation and the possibility of strengthening EU-US relations after the inauguration of President Joe Biden’s administration, discussed the renewal of military mission plans, and deadlines for the acquisition of new military equipment.
The President plans to hold regular quarterly meetings with the Minister of Defense and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to discuss topical issues of national defense.
