On Monday during the conference call, President Gitanas Nausėda, President of Latvia Egils Levits and President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid discussed the challenges posed by the outbreak of corona virus (COVID-19).
The President emphasized the need for coordinated actions at the EU level as well as at regional level.
“First of all, we must ensure smooth return of the Baltic citizens who are currently traveling. We must also secure effective transit of freight transport that supplies the Baltic States”, said the President.
The President reassured his counterparts that Lithuania will maintain transit corridors for Latvian and Estonian citizens until March 19, and informed about the agreement reached with Poland on the transit corridors in the Polish territory that would be open to Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian citizens traveling by convoy.
The Baltic leaders agreed to continue the talks with Poland to arrange new transit corridors for the returning citizens if such a need emerged.
President Nausėda mentioned the coordination of the activities of the Baltic embassies as a positive example of cooperation. Latvian citizens wishing to return have been able to register at the Lithuanian Embassy in Warsaw these days and Estonian citizens at the Lithuanian Embassy in Berlin.
The Baltic Presidents also agreed to raise issues of movement of people, goods and services across the European Union at the European Council meeting.
