Friday, June 21, Brussels – The President Dalia Grybauskaitė took part at the euro area summit in Brussels.
President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, also attended the meeting where European economic and financial situation was discussed and progress in strengthening Economic and Monetary Union assessed.
President of the Eurogroup, Mario Centeno, presented the agreement reached by the EU finance ministers on the key elements of the new euro area budget instrument. It is a financial instrument that will provide additional opportunities for the euro area countries to finance structural reforms and related investments, and the allocation mechanism will ensure that the funding is in line with the set objectives.
The EU leaders agreed that discussions on the source and scope of this financial instrument will continue along with the negotiations on the EU budget for 2021-2027.
The process of strengthening the European Stability Mechanism intended to enhance the resilience of the euro area countries to financial crises was also presented at the meeting.
