On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone.
The Lithuanian and Ukrainian leaders discussed the security situation in the region: Russia’s rapid military build-up on the border with Ukraine and in the territory of Belarus.
The President reiterated Lithuania’s message of solidarity and support to Ukraine and stressed that amid geopolitical tensions it was crucial to maintain the unity of Ukraine and its partners in the West.
“Our main message is that the EU unanimously agrees on support to Ukraine. We need to increase Ukraine’s resilience as it is in our strategic interest. I welcome the European Commission’s decision to provide €1.2 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine,” the President said.
Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that all diplomatic means had to be taken to de-escalate the situation and reduce tensions.
