Tuesday, June 19, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė will attend the United Nations Global Conference on Sustainable Development, RIO+20. The President will deliver a speech at a plenary session and will chair, at the invitation of President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, one of four high level UN Dialogues where representatives from 70 countries will discuss how to get balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
The UN Conference on Sustainable Development is one of major global forums where the heads of state or government and representatives of non-governmental organizations are looking for ways to preserve the environment without hindering economic growth in the world. The agenda of the conference also includes the debates on the development of green economy and on promoting the efficiency and reforms of the UN institutions in charge of sustainable development.
"The world in which our children will live is our common responsibility today. Production and increasing consumption are depleting our planet's natural resources. With intensifying globalization, the issues of separate regions of the world become global concerns which call forth global solutions. The United Nations play an outstanding role in searching for such solutions," the President said.
According to the President, the discussions at the conference will also address the themes important for Lithuania - the ensuring of energy efficiency, the promotion of civilized waste management and renewable energy sources, and the significance of innovations.
Lithuania, together with other EU member states, will seek implementation of the EU's underlying interests: promotion of transition towards green economy; performance of institutional structural reforms for sustainable development; adoption of the action plan on green economy including specific goals and actions on international level; coordination of the objectives of sustainable development with the UN Millennium Development Goals; the strengthening of the UN institutions in charge of sustainable development.
The Lithuanian leader will also deliver a speech at the Women World Leaders' Forum which will be attended by President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff, President of Argentina Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, President of Costa Rica Laura Chinchilla Miranda, President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, Prime Minister of Jamaica Portia Simpson-Miller, Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Head of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, and former President of Finland Tarja Halonen.
UN Conference RIO+20 is the forth global high level conference on the issues of sustainable development and environment. The first United Nations conference on the human environment was held in Stockholm in 1972, followed by the conferences in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and in Johannesburg in 2002.
