The President: The West has a moral obligation to Belarusian democratic society


On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda and Belarusian civil society leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya discussed the situation of civil society and human rights in Belarus.

The President stressed that the persecution and repressions of civil society, the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus, as well as integration between Belarus and Russia in various areas were matters of concern.

Gitanas Nausėda expressed support for the democratic society in Belarus and stressed that support from Western democracies in the Belarusians’ struggle for democracy and assistance to civil society organizations, independent media and the victims of the regime’s repressions were of utmost importance. The President also expressed his support to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya regarding the imprisonment of her husband Sergei Tikhanovsky.

“Vilnius has become one of the centres of Belarusian civil society. Lithuanians know the price of freedom and democracy. We were on this path ourselves a short time ago and we feel an obligation to support the people of Belarus in their effort to build a free, democratic and pluralistic society,” the President said.

Gitanas Nausėda and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya also discussed the issues relevant to the Belarusian diaspora in Lithuania as well as projects and initiatives dedicated to the Francis Skorina Year.
