Wednesday, November 24, Vilnius - President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė attended a solemn sitting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of restoration of Lithuania's diplomacy.
"The XX century did not spare our diplomacy of tests and challenges. But Lithuania's diplomacy has managed to keep its traditions even through the period when the name of Lithuania was erased from the map of the world. The idealism of the then Lithuanian diplomats in Washington, Rome, or Vatican, and their faith in the success of their efforts to reconstitute the historical truth have not been in vain," the President said.
According to the President, much has been achieved over these twenty years since the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania: Lithuania has become a full member of the United Nations, NATO and the EU; nonetheless, new economic and political challenges emerge and place an important task for the diplomatic service.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė urged the diplomats to make an active contribution to promoting Lithuania's economic recovery and wished them to be true professionals and work to the benefit of their country by helping it uncover new opportunities.
"Today we continue writing the history of Lithuania's diplomacy. Let us write it in such a way that we could be proud of it," the President said.
