President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain to discuss the key issues on the agenda of the European Union: the negotiations on the multiannual financial framework and the European Recovery Plan, as well as the preparation for the upcoming Council meeting.
The President reiterated that funding for the cohesion policy and agriculture had to be increased by harmonizing direct payments and ensuring a level playing field for all EU farmers, and increased funding was needed for the EU's obligations relating to the Kaliningrad Special Transit Programme and the decommissioning of the Ignalina NPP. The President highlighted the need to enhance competitiveness and long-term investments to meet the future challenges. According to the President, adequate funding was necessary to achieve those goals.
In their conversation, the leaders also discussed the progress related to the European recovery instrument. The President and the Spanish Prime Minister expressed a shared position with a view to reaching a swift agreement in the negotiations at the European Council so that all member states could benefit as soon as possible from the support instruments provided. The instruments should be based on objective and fair allocation criteria and the latest statistical data, reflecting the impact of the crisis on their economies.
