President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with President Alexander van der Bellen of Austria. The Presidents discussed the situation in Belarus, the prospects of the forthcoming European Council decisions and the readiness of the EU Member States to contribute to resolving the situation in Belarus.
President Nausėda reminded his Austrian counterpart that on August 31, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia imposed regional sanctions against 30 Belarusian officials, including Alexander Lukashenko. According to the President, not only regional but also a European Union-wide response and joint EU sanctions were needed.
The President expressed sincere gratitude to President Alexander van der Bellen for his efforts and constructive dialogue on the events in Belarus.
Austria currently holds the Presidency of the UN Human Rights Council.
