Friday, May 23, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė spoke on the phone with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron. The conversation took place at the initiative of the British Prime Minister.
The main topic of discussion was preparations for the upcoming European Council meeting to be held next week. On Tuesday in Brussels, the heads of state or government of 28 EU member states will discuss the Union's future after European Parliament elections taking place in all member states this week.
The President underlined that the newly formed European Commission after EP elections must continue efforts to promote the well-being of European citizens, economic growth, competitiveness, and job creation. Also, according to the President, it is crucial to pursue consistent policy of strengthening energy security and building a single European energy market which will help secure energy supplies to EU consumers at a lower price.
Among the other issues to be addressed at a European Council meeting will be developments in Ukraine and the security situation after presidential elections this coming Sunday. During her telephone conversation with the UK Prime Minister, the President noted that democratic elections in Ukraine were essential for restoring peace and stability.
According to the Lithuanian head of state, the European Union should help Ukraine overcome economic challenges and maintain firm stance against Russia's aggression.
