President Gitanas Nausėda received letters of credence from Ambassador Inger Buxton of the Kingdom of Sweden and Ambassador Francisco Eduardo Del Rio Lopez of the United States of Mexico.
During the meeting with the Swedish Ambassador, the President emphasized that bilateral relations between Lithuania and Sweden, based on common values, as well as cooperation in the EU and in the format of the Nordic and Baltic countries, were gradually strengthening. Trade volumes are growing: Sweden has been the leading investor in Lithuania for several years. Common core values and shared threat perception makes Sweden is an indispensable security partner in the region.
When discussing the situation in neighboring Belarus, the President highlighted that Lithuania and Sweden, as well as entire international community, had to support Belarusian civil society and democratic processes in the country to ensure the release of political prisoners, human rights, free and democratic elections. The President added that it was also important to have a support package for political, economic and social transformation in the country.
In the conversation with the Mexican Ambassador, the President said the relations between Lithuania and Mexico were friendly and diverse, with great potential for growth. Emphasis was placed on excellent cooperation in the multilateral system, including the UN, the OECD and other international organizations, as well as the strengthening of economic and cultural ties. Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Mexico. The President expressed hope that the signing of the EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement would spur economic exchange between Lithuania and Mexico.
