President Gitanas Nausėda received letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Italian Republic, Diego Ungaro. The meeting focused on continuously expanding bilateral and multilateral relations as well as common approach to a great number of issues. The President recalled with delight his last year’s visit to Italy where he met with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
Among the other issues discussed were bilateral political, economic and cultural contacts, cooperation in the European Union and NATO, and regional security matters.
President Gitanas Nausėda thanked Italy for its engagement in strengthening the security of the Baltic States. The deployment of Italian troops to NATO’s enhanced forward presence and the Baltic Air Policing mission as well as their participation in military exercises in Lithuania was a definite expression of Italy’s commitment to its allies and regional stability.
The President underlined that Lithuania and Italy were linked by close ties of cooperation in business, research, academic exchange, and culture. Italy is an important partner of Lithuania, ranking eighth in terms of trade turnover according to last year’s figures. Lithuanian exports to Italy are continuing to grow. There is a lot of potential in economic cooperation, too, especially in such high-tech sectors as life sciences, engineering and automotive industry.
The President and the Italian Ambassador also exchanged views on migration and the ongoing situation in Belarus .
